Arch Joiner

died January 20, 1897 · Tangipahoa Parish Prison, Tangipahoa Parish, Louisiana

Archie Joiner was held in the Amite City jail in Louisiana. A press dispatch from January 1897 says a mob of about 200 men broke into the jail, overpowered the deputies guarding it, and took him from custody, while another account says a deputy was forced to give up the keys. According to the dispatch, the mob took him to Tickfaw, Louisiana, where he was shot to death, and he protested his innocence before he was killed. Other accounts say he was hanged, and one says he was tortured by fire, then hanged and shot, at a site near Independence, so the method and location of the killing are disputed.
