Died in jail or a lockup
Anthony
Abner Anthony, a Black man, was held in the jail at Hot Springs, Virginia, in late February 1893. The Morning News and the Richmond Dispatch reported that a mob of about forty men took him from the jail and hanged him from a tree near the courthouse. The Waterbury Evening Democrat said the mob broke into the jail at midnight, while a Cincinnati paper reported that the men demanded the keys from the jailer at pistol point. The reports disagree on how the mob got in, and they do not say whether any officers tried to stop them.
Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched
