Anthony Myrie
Anthony Myrie, 24, was held at Greene Correctional Facility in Coxsackie, New York, when he died on February 11, 2019. His wife, Sade Myrie, said he called her that morning, seemed troubled, and told her he was being taken to solitary confinement; she later learned he had died. The state Department of Corrections and Community Supervision said he took part in a fight with several incarcerated people, that officers stopped it without force, and that he collapsed in the medical unit, apparently of sudden cardiac arrest. Preliminary autopsy results suggested a heart attack, but the official cause was still pending, and his family and supporters have demanded answers.
Cause of death, as reported: Died of illness (disputed). The state says he died apparently of sudden cardiac arrest after a fight that officers ended without force, and preliminary autopsy results suggest a heart attack, but his family rejects the official account and had an outside autopsy done.
Reported by: Thomas Mailey, New York State corrections spokesperson (the agency that held him); preliminary autopsy results.
