Anthony Lewis
Anthony Lewis, 30, of Springhill, Louisiana, died on August 30, 2010, after being held at the Bi-State Justice Center in Texarkana, Texas. The Bowie County Sheriff's Office said deputies believed he tried to escape by climbing to the roof and lowering himself with a rope made of clothing, which broke, and that he fell more than 70 feet. He died of his injuries at a hospital in Little Rock, Arkansas. The sheriff believes he had help, and KSLA reported that the contracted jail staff member on duty was doing paperwork at the time, with the housing contractor investigating.
Cause of death, as reported: Died in an accident (neglect alleged). The sheriff's office said he fell about five stories when a rope he made from clothing broke as he lowered himself from the roof, and the sheriff believes he had help; a family or outside account reportedly says the jail staff member on duty was doing paperwork instead of supervising the housing area.
Reported by: Bowie County Sheriff's Office (the agency that held him). The only account of how this person died comes from the agency that held him.
