Anthony J. Gay
Anthony J. Gay, 42, was held at William Donaldson Correctional Facility, a state prison in west Jefferson County, Alabama. Other incarcerated men found him unresponsive in his bed or in a dormitory early on the morning of August 16, 2022, and he was pronounced dead at 6:09 a.m. according to the Jefferson County Coroner's Office. Family members remember him as the only child of Claudia Mae Gay, who raised him alone, and as a basketball player at Marbury High School who sang in the choir at Lilly Hill Baptist Church. The coroner's autopsy found no trauma or foul play, but the cause of death remains pending further laboratory testing, and the Alabama Department of Corrections has said it is investigating.
