Anthony Fulwider
Anthony Fulwider, 31, was one of four men held at the privately run Cimarron Correctional Facility in Cushing, Oklahoma, who died on September 12, 2015, during a violent fight between rival prison gangs. The Oklahoma Department of Corrections identified him and said the deaths followed violence that Saturday, and the Payne County District Attorney described the four men as stabbed to death in a brief disturbance. A civil suit filed by a relative of one of the dead men says a single officer radioed that a fight seemed about to start and that no other guards responded until after it ended. Prosecutors later dropped charges against men accused of taking part, saying the evidence was insufficient, and the state has not released its investigative report.
Cause of death, as reported: Killed by another person in custody (disputed; neglect alleged). Prosecutors say the four men were stabbed to death in a gang fight between rival prisoners, and the Department of Corrections calls it a homicide; a civil suit by a dead man's relative says a single officer radioed that a fight was about to start and no other guards responded until after it ended.
Reported by: Oklahoma Department of Corrections (the agency that held him); Payne County District Attorney Laura Austin Thomas (outside investigators); court records and documents in a civil suit; a relative of one of the dead men, in a civil suit (family or their lawyers).
Lawsuit: His family sued CoreCivic, the prison's owner, in civil suits that were still pending in 2018, and no settlement or award amount has been reported.
