Anna Brown

29 years old · died September 21, 2011 · Richmond Heights City Detention Facility, St. Louis County, Missouri

Anna Brown, 29, was a homeless mother of two whose mother, Dorothy Davis, said she called her children every day. In September 2011 she sought treatment in St. Louis-area hospitals for leg pain and a sprained ankle, and police took her to a Richmond Heights city detention cell, where she was found dead about fifteen minutes after officers left her there. An autopsy, as reported by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, found blood clots that formed in her legs and moved to her lungs. Her family and their attorney, Keith Link, say she was treated unfairly and are seeking answers, while the hospital says its staff followed medical guidelines and the mayor said a review found officers followed procedure.

Cause of death, as reported: Died of illness (disputed). An autopsy found blood clots that formed in her legs and moved to her lungs, and her family says authorities treated her unfairly and is seeking answers.

Reported by: autopsy; St. Louis Post-Dispatch (reporters); Associated Press (reporters).
