Andrew Thomas
Andrew Thomas, a Black man, died in Mississippi on July 18, 1895, when a mob took him from the custody of a sheriff and a deputy and killed him. According to one 1895 report, the officers were bringing him back to the scene when the mob seized him, and they judged that resisting would be unwise and handed him over without giving him time to make a statement. A second report says he had been held at Mobile for several days before being brought to Scranton on Wednesday night, and that a mob took him from officers there and lynched him. One account notes there was talk of impeaching the officials involved.
Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched. A mob took Andrew Thomas from a sheriff and deputy who were bringing him back to the scene, and the officers surrendered him rather than resist.
Reported by: Sheriff and deputy who had arrested him (the agency that held him); 1895 newspaper report (reporters).
