Andrew Chandler

35 years old · died November 12, 2021 · Zanesville City Jail, Muskingum County, Ohio

Andrew Chandler worked full time at Cracker Barrel and was on his way to living in his own apartment, Homeless Hands founder Tammy Clark said. She had helped him for five years and said he loved people, never missed a day of work, and was always doing something for others. On November 12, 2021, other people held at the Zanesville City Jail found him unresponsive, and he was taken to Genesis Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Zanesville police said he died of an overdose from drugs that investigators believe were smuggled into the jail, and a Muskingum County prosecutor said a toxicology result showed fentanyl above the fatal level. Friends have called for accountability over how drugs got into the jail.

Cause of death, as reported: Died of an overdose. Police say he died of an overdose from drugs suspected to have been smuggled into the jail, and a toxicology report found fentanyl at a fatal level, according to prosecutors.

Reported by: Zanesville Police Department (the agency that held him); Muskingum County Assistant Prosecutor Michael Hughes (court).
