Andre Maiden

24 years old · died August 26, 2020 · Iroquois County Jail, Iroquois County, Illinois

Andre J. Maiden, 24, died on August 26, 2020, while held at the Iroquois County Jail in Watseka, Illinois, where he was awaiting trial. His mother, Alta Young, said, "I just want my baby back," and his brother Miles Maiden said the family wants answers about his care. Family members say he called them feeling very sick, vomiting, and asked for an ambulance the day before he died, and that jail staff failed to give him proper medical care; the sheriff's office did not respond to questions about this. Officials have not released a cause of death, the coroner awaited toxicology results, and the Illinois State Police investigation is ongoing, while the family is having an independent autopsy done.

Cause of death, as reported: Cause not yet determined (disputed; neglect alleged). Cause remains undetermined: the Illinois State Police investigation and toxicology are pending, while the family says he was denied an ambulance and given no proper medical care after complaining of vomiting and illness, and they are having an independent autopsy done.

Reported by: Illinois State Police (outside investigators); Iroquois County coroner (medical examiner or coroner); family.
