Died in jail or a lockup
Anderson Upton
Anderson Upton was according to a January 1869 dispatch from Augusta printed in the Memphis Daily Appeal taken from a jail and lynched along with others in his party. The jail's name is garbled in the surviving text, and the paper does not say when the killing happened. The dispatch's claims about the men's actions are unverified, and this account does not establish them.
