Amra Miletic
Amra Miletic was a 47-year-old woman who came to the United States from Bosnia after surviving the war there, where her father and brothers were killed. Her sister-in-law remembered her as intelligent, loving and funny. She was held at the Weber County Jail in Utah in early 2011 and was found dead in her cell in March of that year. A federal lawsuit filed on behalf of her estate says jail staff ignored repeated reports of bloody stools, severe pain and weight loss, and did not give her the heart medication she needed. The medical examiner linked her death to a heart rhythm failure after blood loss from colitis, and the sheriff's office declined to comment.
Cause of death, as reported: Died from neglect by staff (disputed). Her family's federal lawsuit says jail staff ignored repeated warning signs of bleeding, withheld her heart medication and did not treat her colitis, and the medical examiner linked her death to a fatal arrhythmia after blood loss from colitis.
Reported by: medical examiner (as cited in the estate's federal lawsuit) (medical examiner or coroner); her family's attorneys and estate lawsuit (family or their lawyers).
Lawsuit: Her estate sued Weber County in federal court in June 2012 over her death at the Weber County Jail, and no settlement or award amount has been reported.
