Amos Kidd

16 years old · died July 6, 1874 · Enterprise guard house, Enterprise

Amos Kidd was a Black youth, about 16 according to one account, who was held in the guard house at Enterprise in early July 1874. The Meridian Mercury, reprinted in The Star of Pascagoula, reported that a crowd demanded the keys, a scuffle followed, and the officers were placed under arrest. That account says the crowd then took Amos from the guard house and hanged him from a tree at the forks of two rivers, and that the jailer first refused the keys before handing them over after a scuffle. The Hickman Courier, citing an unnamed account, reported that a group of citizens overpowered the jailer and hanged him.
