Alvin Stephen Modeste

43 years old · died December 26, 2023 · North Broward Bureau, Broward County, Florida

Alvin Stephen Modeste, 43, died in late December 2023 in his cell at the North Broward Bureau in Broward County, Florida, a unit that mainly holds people with mental health issues and special needs. The Broward Sheriff's Office said he hanged himself. Earlier that month a court had ordered him to receive a mental health evaluation under the Baker Act, and Broward Public Defender Gordon Weekes said deputies did not watch people closely enough to prevent the death. His sister, Corine Modeste, said she talks to him all the time, does not accept the suicide account, and has asked to see surveillance video.

Cause of death, as reported: Died by suicide (disputed; neglect alleged). The Broward Sheriff's Office says Modeste hanged himself in his cell; his sister says the suicide account is not believable and has asked for surveillance video, and Public Defender Gordon Weekes says deputies did not supervise inmates closely enough to prevent the death.

Reported by: Broward Sheriff's Office (the agency that held him); his sister, Corine Modeste (family or their lawyers); Broward Public Defender Gordon Weekes (family or their lawyers).
