Alvin Saunders

33 years old · died October 11, 2025 · Wake County Detention Center, Wake County, North Carolina

Alvin Saunders, 33, was held in the psychiatric unit of the Wake County Detention Center in North Carolina when he died on October 11, 2025. Officers found him unresponsive in his cell, and a News & Observer report says he had been seen lying on the floor for hours beforehand and that it is unclear whether a nurse acted after being told. The same report says he was held in a single cell for 23 hours a day and does not explain why. The State Medical Examiner's Office said heart disease caused his death and classed it as natural, and the district attorney found no criminal activity after a State Bureau of Investigation review that the sheriff's office requested.

Cause of death, as reported: Died of illness (neglect alleged). The State Medical Examiner's Office ruled his death natural from heart disease, and an account says officers found him unresponsive after he had been seen lying on the floor for hours, with unclear action by a nurse.

Reported by: State Medical Examiner's Office (medical examiner or coroner).
