Alva Campbell
Alva Campbell, 69, was held on Ohio's death row at the Chillicothe prison complex. His execution in November 2017 was halted after staff could not find a usable vein, and the state had set a new date for 2019. His lawyer, David Stebbins, said his health had been failing for years from lung cancer, COPD and other illnesses, and that he needed oxygen. The Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction said he was found unresponsive in his cell on March 3, 2018, and was pronounced dead at a hospital, and that he died of natural causes; an autopsy was planned.
Cause of death, as reported: Died of illness. The Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction said he died of natural causes, and his lawyer said he had long suffered from serious illnesses including lung cancer and COPD.
Reported by: Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction (the agency that held him); his lawyer.
