Alleny Carbone

15 years old · died June 10, 2018 · Manatee Regional Juvenile Detention Center, Manatee County, Florida

Alleny Carbone was a 15-year-old girl in foster care who died on June 10, 2018, while held at the Manatee Regional Juvenile Detention Center in Bradenton, Florida. Her father, Victor Carbone, said they spoke by phone and that he tried to warn facility administrators she was in danger. Police preliminarily ruled her death a suicide by hanging, and the medical examiner's final report was still pending when the reports were published. A state Department of Juvenile Justice Inspector General investigation found that she had tried to strangle herself twice, that mental health staff repeatedly removed her from suicide watch and did not provide regular treatment, and that required 10-minute room checks were not carried out. The contracted counselor disputes that treatment was possible given her condition.

Cause of death, as reported: Died by suicide (disputed; neglect alleged). The Florida Department of Juvenile Justice inspector general found detention officers and a contracted counselor violated rules or failed to supervise her, and the counselor disputes that treatment was possible given her condition; the Bradenton Police Department says surveillance video shows a delayed staff response.

Reported by: Florida Department of Juvenile Justice Inspector General (outside investigators); Bradenton Police Department (outside investigators); Florida Department of Juvenile Justice (outside investigators).
