Allen Green
Allen Green, a Black man, was held in the Walhalla jail in Oconee County, South Carolina, when a mob broke in on April 24, 1930. The mob took him from the jail and shot him to death, and the sheriff, who tried to stop them and refused to hand the prisoner over, was struck down and needed more than a week of hospital care. Seventeen men, including the mayor of Walhalla and a night policeman, were indicted for murder over the killing, and press accounts said the mayor and the night policeman were among those who led the mob. The trial was postponed until fall because of the heat, and a civil court later awarded his widow, Mima Green, $2,000 under a South Carolina law for victims of mobs.
