Died in jail or a lockup
Alexander Bell
A mob of about 100 people took Alex Bell from Deputy Sheriff Kennard near Montpelier, Tennessee, as the deputy was taking him to jail, according to a Nashville dispatch published October 6, 1892. The dispatch says the mob hanged him from a limb and shot his body many times. It reports that Kennard tried for about fifteen minutes to disperse the crowd before being overpowered. A later Shenandoah Herald account describes the killing in Montpelier but does not say whether the sheriff resisted or gave up his prisoner.
