Died in jail or a lockup
Alex Wyatt
Alex Wyatt died in a jail in Steubenville, Ohio, in June 1883. According to a special dispatch printed in The Evening Critic, he hanged himself there and was found dead the morning after. The dispatch says his three children visited him in his cell the day before he died, and that he said an affectionate farewell to them. The writer of the dispatch argued that the act was premeditated, a reading the paper printed without any other source for it.
Cause of death, as reported: Died by suicide. A special dispatch from Steubenville, Ohio, reprinted in the paper says he hanged himself in the jail and was found dead the next morning.
