Died in prison
Alan Hurwitz
Alan Hurwitz, 79, was a longtime teacher and civil rights activist who taught adult education classes on civil rights history while held at the Butner federal prison complex in North Carolina. Officials released him in May 2020 because of his poor health, and he flew out of the area with a fever and chest pains, untested for the virus, according to The Marshall Project. He was hospitalized in Denver, placed in a medically induced coma and put on a ventilator, and died there in early June 2020, with COVID-19 given as the cause. The Bureau of Prisons does not count him among Butner's dead.
