Alan Eugene Miller
Alan Eugene Miller, a man, was executed by the State of Alabama by nitrogen gas at Holman Correctional Facility in Atmore on September 26, 2024, according to the Alabama Department of Corrections. Sources describe his final hours as spent with his sisters, brother, brother-in-law, a spiritual advisor and attorneys, and say he asked those in the room to take care of someone. He was the second person in the United States put to death by nitrogen gas, after Alabama adopted the method in January 2024, and sources say it took roughly 16 minutes from the gas starting to flow until he was pronounced dead. In 2022 a lethal injection attempt was called off after executioners spent more than an hour trying to place a catheter, and Miller had asked for nitrogen gas, which the state told a federal court it could not use for that attempt. Officials said his movements during the execution were expected.
