Adam Crow

36 years old · died May 2017 · Aiken County Detention Center, Aiken County, South Carolina

Adam Crow, 36, was a father who loved the outdoors, cooking and grilling, and time at the lake by a bonfire; he worked as a logger, carpenter and handyman, and his mother Lila says he battled alcoholism and bipolar disorder. In May 2017 he went to his mother's house seeking a crisis hospital, and he was instead held alone in a holding cell at the Aiken County Detention Center, where he died by suicide, according to his mother and court documents. Surveillance footage is said to show him covering a camera lens, and his mother says jailers took too long to notice. Her lawsuit says medical staff cleared him for jail despite known risks and that he went unchecked for a long time; the jail administrators, a private health provider and the hospital have denied fault.
