Absalom Kimmel

died July 8, 1872 · Mercer County Detention Facility, Mercer County, Ohio

Absalom Kimmel was held in the Celina jail in Ohio when, according to a Chicago Tribune correspondent's account published July 10, 1872, a mob seized the sheriff, took the keys from him, and removed him from his cell. The crowd took the men to a field about eleven miles away, where they hanged him on July 8, 1872. The Tribune account says the sheriff was seized and the keys taken from him, and that a younger man of 16 was spared and returned to jail. A Cincinnati dispatch reprinted in the Wilmington Daily Commercial also reports a mob taking men from the Celina jail and hanging two of them, but its text is garbled and does not clearly name who was hanged.
