Abraham Smith

died August 5, 1844 · Madison County Jail, Madison County, Missouri

Abraham Smith was held in the Fredericktown jail in Madison County, Missouri. In August 1844, according to a St. Louis Republican account reprinted in a New Hampshire paper, a group of men broke the jail open with axes and crowbars, took him out and hanged him from a tree near the jail. The report says he was cut down and hanged again. A later Liberator reprint says a coroner's jury found a true bill against those involved, and that several were arrested and committed for trial.
