Abdirashi Hussein
Abdirashi Hussein was held at the Forensic Mental Health Program's North Campus in St. Peter, Minnesota, where he had been moved in 2022. He was killed by his roommate on the night of December 31, 2023, and a federal lawsuit filed by his brother, Abshir Mohamed Hussein, says the roommate was playing a violent video game that triggered psychosis and that staff failed to stop the attack and protect him. The lawsuit says Hussein was beaten with a guitar and choked with its strap. The state Department of Direct Care and Treatment said it is reviewing the lawsuit, and the facility's CEO said his friends, family and partners in treatment were heartbroken by his loss.
Cause of death, as reported: Killed by another person in custody (neglect alleged). The medical examiner ruled the death a homicide from blunt force trauma, and the family's lawsuit says staff ignored warning signs, let the roommate play a violent video game against hospital rules, and failed to protect him.
Reported by: Abshir Mohamed Hussein, as trustee for the next of kin, in a federal lawsuit (family or their lawyers); Minnesota Department of Human Services (the agency that held him); medical examiner's report (medical examiner or coroner).
Lawsuit: His brother, Abshir Mohamed Hussein, sued in federal court as trustee for the next of kin over the death, alleging staff failed to protect him from a roommate; no amount has been reported.
