A. J. Hunt
A. J. Hunt was held in the Walla Walla county jail in Washington. On the night of April 24, 1891, soldiers broke open the jail, and according to court-martial testimony about fifty or more men from Colonel C. E. Compton's command of the Fourth Cavalry took him out and shot him. Colonel Compton is being tried by court-martial for neglect of duty in connection with the killing and has pleaded not guilty. An early report said jail guards fired on the soldiers and that others may have died, but that account was unconfirmed, and a national news item reported that the President called the soldiers' lawlessness disgraceful and ordered a court of inquiry.
Cause of death, as reported: Killed by another person in custody
