Type is the kind of place the person was held. Immigration detention means a facility run to hold people for ICE; the Held by ICE tag marks anyone in ICE custody wherever they were held, including county jails and federal prisons that hold people for ICE, so it also appears on jail and prison deaths. In the same way, Juvenile detention means a facility for young people, while the Under 18 tag marks anyone younger than 18 wherever they were held, since children are also held in adult jails, prisons and immigration detention.
Causes of death are what officials, families or lawsuits said at the time, not my findings. Gender and race appear in the downloads only as reported. This is an undercount, and records may change as reporting is reviewed. Last updated October 16, 2026.
