William Henderson

30 years old · died October 11, 1895 · Cape Girardeau County, Missouri

William Henderson, a Black man about 30 years old, was held in the village jail at Jackson, Missouri, in October 1895. According to a special dispatch from Jackson printed in a St. Louis paper, a mob broke into the jail, took him to a pasture on the edge of the village and hanged him from an elm tree. A second paper gives the same account, saying a posse had first captured him before he was placed in the jail. Neither account reports the jailer's or officers' response to the mob, and the dispatch expected few, if any, of those involved to be arrested.
