Wiley Anette

died June 25, 1903 · Baker County Jail, Baker County, Georgia

Wiley Anette was one of three men held in the Newton jail in Baker County, Georgia, in June 1903. The Montgomery Advertiser reported that an armed mob forced the jailer at gunpoint to open the cell door on the night of June 25, and that the jailer did not recognize any of the mob. The men were taken to a tree less than a mile away, where they were hanged and their bodies were riddled with bullets. The Birmingham Age-Herald said the mob overpowered the jailer at the jail door instead, and the Americus Times-Recorder and Savannah Tribune give different dates and times for the killings. The accounts do not agree on how the jailer responded or on when the killing happened.

Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched. A mob took Wiley Anette from the Newton jail and hanged him from a tree, then shot him, according to the accounts; one account says the jailer was forced at gunpoint to open the cell door.

Reported by: Newton jail jailer (as described in newspaper accounts) (the agency that held him); Americus Times-Recorder (reporters).
