Died in jail or a lockup
Name not reported
A Black man was held in the Hodgenville jail in Kentucky. According to a 1901 Age-Herald account, a mob of fifty to seventy men came into town around 2 a.m. on October 31, 1901, and the jail surrendered its keys when they demanded them. The paper reports that the men took him from the jail, shot him about 100 yards away, and hanged him from the courthouse steps. The account is the only source for these events, and the claims about the jail's handover of its keys and the mob's actions are not confirmed elsewhere.
