According to an August 1905 Montgomery Advertiser editorial, quoted in a reader's letter, an armed crowd took a man from the jail at Waco, Texas, and hanged him. The editorial blamed the seizure on an earlier court ruling, which it called the first failure of justice. A letter writer argued that the editorial encouraged mob violence, and the Advertiser denied defending mob law.
