A male prisoner held at the Montrose County jail in Montrose, Colorado, was taken from the jail by a mob on September 21, 1886, according to a dispatch reprinted in the Los Angeles Daily Herald. The mob attacked the jail with sledges and crowbars and forced its way in, and the sheriff, who lived near the jail, was alerted too late to stop them. When he arrived with a posse, the mob fired on him, and the exchange of fire caused no injuries. The dispatch says the sheriff drove the mob into the mountains, where it scattered, and that one group is supposed to have hanged the man. Citizens searched all day but found no trace of his body, and the man's name is not legible in the OCR text.
