A Black man whose name was never established was being held in the jail at DeWitt, Arkansas. Early on August 9, 1916, about twenty men arrived in automobiles, overpowered the jailer and forced him to surrender the keys, according to newspaper accounts. The mob took the man to Stuttgart, hanged him from a tree and riddled his body with bullets, and the body was left hanging until local officers cut it down the next morning.
