A man with ALS died at Bridgeport Correctional Center in Bridgeport, Connecticut, on June 25, 2022, less than 24 hours after he was admitted to the facility while in opioid withdrawal. Disability Rights Connecticut's report, based on a neglect complaint, says nurses and correction officers failed to provide adequate medical care, ignored his dietary needs and did not monitor his withdrawal. The report says that after he was found lifeless in his cell, staff did not attempt CPR or other lifesaving measures, and that staff falsified cell-check records. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner attributed the death to complications of acute and chronic opioid use, and the Department of Correction said it is reviewing the report's findings.
Cause of death, as reported: Died of an overdose (disputed; neglect alleged). The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner ruled the death a complication of acute and chronic opioid use, but Disability Rights Connecticut's report says nurses and correction officers ignored his dietary needs, did not monitor his withdrawal, delayed CPR for about 19 minutes and falsified cell-check records.
