A 21-year-old woman was held at the Cumberland County Jail in New Jersey in February 2017 and died there the next day. A U.S. Department of Justice investigation says that soon after arriving, she told jail staff she was in severe psychological distress, with anxiety, hopelessness and paranoia. Federal investigators said she needed medication-assisted treatment and did not receive it. The death was claimed to be a suicide, and the DOJ report says the jail's mental health failures likely contributed to deaths like hers.
