A person died while held at the Athens-Clarke County Jail in Athens, one of four deaths at the jail after April 2025, according to a July 16, 2025 report in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Sheriff John Q. Williams said at least two of the deaths were apparent drug overdoses linked to illicit drugs, including fentanyl, inside the jail.
