A man held at the Nassau County Jail slit his wrists in late December 2010 and was taken to the prisoner medical unit at Nassau University Medical Center. According to Nassau homicide detectives, he hanged himself in that unit a few days later, in early January 2011. The sheriff asked the state Commission of Correction to investigate his death, along with other suicides, more quickly.
