According to a September 1897 editorial in the Goldsboro Weekly Argus, a mob took five men from the law officers holding them in Versailles, Indiana, and killed them. The paper said the mob also nearly killed the sheriff. The paper said there was no positive evidence against the men. This man was one of the five.
