Died in jail or a lockup
Name not reported
A man held in the jail at Sparta, Kentucky, was taken from custody on May 30, 1872, when a party of about a hundred men gathered in front of the jail around 1 o'clock and demanded the keys. The jailer reluctantly handed them over, and the men carried the man about half a mile out of town and hanged him from a tree. The account gives no name for him, and nothing about who he was or what the mob claimed against him is recorded here.
