Five men of Italian origin were taken from the jail at Tallulah, Louisiana, by a mob and hanged, according to a December 1899 report. The men were held at the jail when the mob took them and killed them. State authorities and a representative of the Italian Embassy investigated the killings and reached differing conclusions, particularly on whether the victims were Italian citizens. A federal inquiry into the case was still in progress when the report was published.
