A man in his mid-50s with underlying health conditions died at a hospital on October 19, 2020, after testing positive for COVID-19 while held at Pender Correctional Institution in North Carolina. He had been hospitalized on September 29, 2020. The North Carolina state prison system announced the death and said it was the third COVID-19 death at the prison.
