Four men were found dead in April 2017 in a housing unit for people with mental illness at Kirkland Correctional Institution in Columbia, South Carolina. A 2018 Post and Courier report said two other people held at the prison lured the four men into a cell and attacked them, and that the deaths were caused by strangulation and stabbing. Two other people held at the prison have been charged in connection with the deaths.
