A 61-year-old man from Virginia was being held at the Joplin City Jail in Joplin, Missouri, when jail staff reported a medical emergency on the morning of Monday, October 12, 2026. He was taken by ambulance to a local hospital and pronounced dead less than an hour later. The Jasper County coroner's office has scheduled an autopsy to help determine the cause of death. Police say the death is under investigation.
