A man in his 70s died on April 9, 2020, at a hospital outside Stateville Correctional Center in Crest Hill, Illinois, where he was held in the custody of the Illinois Department of Corrections. A department spokesperson said he died of COVID-19, one of five COVID-19 deaths the state had reported at the prison by then. Family members still inside Stateville said more testing and cleaning supplies were needed and that overcrowding made social distancing impossible. A state criminal justice record lists his age as 78 and gives the manner of death as natural causes, as the department reported it.
