A Black man held in the custody of an officer at Columbus, Texas, was taken from that officer by a party of masked men. The American Citizen newspaper reported in February 1881 that he was killed with gunfire and was riddled with bullets. Those are the newspaper's words, and this account gives no further detail about the people involved.
