A person held in custody at Monticello, New York, was shot and killed on the morning of February 3, 1884. According to the Grenada Sentinel, four prisoners tried to break free during a confrontation with the sheriff. The person was shot dead during that confrontation. Two of the group were recaptured and one escaped.
