Five people of Italian origin were being held in the jail at Tallulah when a mob took them out and hanged them. State authorities and a representative of the Italian embassy investigated separately and reached conflicting findings, particularly on whether the victims were Italian citizens. The Paducah Sun reported that the state did not appear able to find and punish those responsible, and a federal investigation was launched.
