A 17-year-old girl died on May 29, 2024, while held at Lake Academy, a juvenile residential program in Tampa run by TrueCore Behavioral Solutions under contract with the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice. Former teachers who had taught her described her as a student they remembered, and one said she was heartbroken by the death. The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office and the state inspector general are investigating the death. After it, the state ended its contract with TrueCore, which said it was not culpable and offered condolences to her family.
