A Black man, whose name the sources do not give, was held by a guard near Brandon, Mississippi, in late September 1843, according to a letter from Brandon printed in the Southern Farmer and reprinted by the Alexandria Gazette. The letter says a mob took him from the guard during the night, dragged him into the woods and hanged him, then threw his body into an old house that was set on fire. The paper said it was not known who carried out the killing, and the Southern Farmer called for those responsible to be found and brought to justice. Whether the guard resisted or handed him over is not stated in the account.
